Falling Leaves, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and Football, Oh My!

Why I Love the Fall. Thirsties Blog. Bert Anderson
It's here.
I love everything about fall. I love the colors associated with fall, I love the smells that come with the fall, and despite not being interested in football at all I like the idea of a football game on a crisp Sunday afternoon. There's just something refreshing about the fall that no other season has to offer in my opinion. It's different from spring; I associate it with a new beginning, signaling the start of a new school year. It's a welcomed escape from summer's chaotic schedule. To me, fall marches in with a schedule, a routine; like a drill sergeant - school starts, schedules resume and the carefree days of summer are pushed off of the field. I find it almost relaxing. Every summer I am amazed that each day is jam packed, each weekend is filled to the brim with getaways, outings and obligations. Isn't summer supposed to be a time for rest and relaxation? I mean that's the way it felt when I was in school - no school equals setting your own schedule. Now, as an adult, I almost can't stand the summer's crazy, unscheduled schedule of busyness. I rarely see the friends that I want to see because everyone's off and travelling. Plus, each and everyday I need to be Super Mom; coming up with ways to enjoy our day and beat the humid 100 degree weather without resorting to turning on the boob tube. (And don't be too impressed with that because I do inevitably turn on the TV.) But autumn swifts in nicely and it's like the chaos that is the summer disappears. Am I wrong here in my assessment of why autumn is amazing? We have a routine now: Brennan goes to preschool three times a week in the morning. That doesn't leave us with a ton of free time to just sit in our pajamas, which, let's be honest is how you would frequently find me if you knocked on my door any weekday this past July. The autumn forces me to get back on track with life; this season makes me organized! She gives my children order to their day as well as new experiences and opportunities. Fall issues in a newness and hopefulness that the other seasons don't. Spring is hopeful and new because after months upon months of snow covered grounds we finally get a glimpse of life. Winter, well, one could argue that it's somewhat hopeful since the first snowfall is so fresh and pretty. And finally, summer signals hopes of rest and relaxation (I have not experienced since having children). I love the fall. To me it's the perfect season. I think Tom Hanks said it best in one of my favorite movies, You've Got Mail, "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address..." Newly sharpened pencils, refreshingly orderly. I guess I love the fall because it reminds me of order and being a mother to two under the age of five means I live a life that's anything but orderly. What's your favorite season? Why?

  • I used to love summer, but I just can’t take the heat anymore. I hate sweating. The fall weather is always a big relief. I just hate that fall means the start of school for me. Fortunately I am finally graduating this year.

  • Fall has always been my favorite too, although I love having my teacher husband home during the summer.

  • I love fall! Living in New England means the leaves change and the cider and pumpkins are plentiful.

  • I LOVE fall as well!! I just put up my fall wreath and have begun fall crafts with my kids! I love being able to spend time outside and not be too hot or too cold…it’s JUST RIGHT! And I agree, fall colors are my very favorite!

  • I love fall and winter! The holidays are my absolute favorite time of year. It’s just a bummer that they go by way too fast!
