SO, when you're in the throws of potty training, what can you do to help? Here are some of our favorite potty training tricks and tips to help you potty train faster and easier.

Give Lots of Praise

Potty training is guided so much by your own attitude and reaction to the potty training journey. When your child successfully uses the potty, make sure to give them lots and lots of positive praise so that they know that their actions were positive and using the potty is something that you would love for them to do again. In general, if you look silly jumping up and down, dancing, singing and giving your baby lots of big hugs and kisses, you're doing it right. I have personally danced around to Frozen songs looking completely ridiculous, just to praise a good potty job.

Reward a Good Job

Every child will have a reward system that works for them. Some parents use a sticker chart to track potty training successes while others use immediate rewards like snacks or a small treat. Make sure to immediately reward a success so that baby or toddler connects a successful trip to the potty with a positive reward. Some families also like for several small rewards to accumulate into one big reward like a trip to the movies or maybe a special restaurant to reward consecutive days of potty training success. Whichever reward you choose, make sure it's something your child will get excited about and can be focused on.

Be Attentive

What has worked for us in the past was to be extremely attentive to our child. The more you get down on the floor and play, let them be near you constantly and interact with them, the more likely you are to catch an accident before it occurs. The more interactive your play (and your day) the more often you will notice their signs of needing to go and the better your chances of giving your child time to get to the potty. If you feel like you are staring at your child for a long period of time and they are constantly near you, you are doing it right.

Be a Homebody

The bulk of potty training is much simpler to do at home than out and about. 'Making it' to the potty will be quicker and easier if you are very close to a bathroom at all times. In the past, we have found that staying home for three days helped with our potty training immensely and seemed to give us enough practice before venturing back out into the world.

Encourage Lots of Fluids

The more they drink, the more they go. Offering near constant fluids will increase the number of times your child needs to use the potty and therefore the number of chances for success. The more repetitive the behavior, the easier it will be for your child to retain the information and repeat potty successes. Many parents do, however, like to limit fluids before bed to help with nighttime training in addition to the work they are doing during the day. This is completely fine, as long as they have plenty of chances to go during the day.

Sometimes, no matter what you plan, kids need to go at their own pace. I have had easy potty trainers and more difficult potty trainers and I can tell you that when they are ready, it will work. Sometimes, they just need a little more time in their Thirsties cloth before they are ready to make the trainer switch.
