Tradition! Tradition! (Family traditions that is)

Family Traditions. Thirsties Blog. Bert Anderson
It started the first weekend after we returned from our honeymoon: Sunday Night Breakfast (or SNB for short). As a child I always loved it when my mother made us breakfast for dinner. So one day, during our honeymoon, I announced to my husband that we would be starting a Sunday night tradition. That's how Sunday Night Breakfast began. Now, I think before we had children I only did SNB once every few years and then this past spring I decided to reinstate Sunday Night Breakfast. I love it, the kids love it and it's so easy. Sometimes I venture out of our normal pancakes or waffles with scrambled eggs and get fancy. Once I made cheesy cauliflower basil pancakes that were supposed to be waffles. They kept sticking to the waffle iron and made a huge mess so I decided to ditch the recipe. That's our Sunday night tradition, well, one of them at least. The other is one my husband brought from his family. For my husband's family of origin, Sunday night meant popcorn and smoothie night paired with watching Disney's Family Movie. (Remember that blast from the past?) Now we've got Sunday Night Breakfast and Popcorn Smoothie Movie Night. I'll admit, lately I've pushed the popcorn and smoothie night more than SNB because it means I'm not the one cooking as my husband readily takes on the duty of chef. Whether it's Sunday Night Breakfast, Popcorn Smoothie Movie Night, I really do believe that every family should have some tradition for their children to look back on with appreciation. Tradition, by definition means, "a way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family, society, etc., for a long time." It ties us together as family groups, sets us apart from those around us, it's special and binding. Do you have any family traditions that you hope your children will cherish and pass down onto their children?

  • My mother and I used to make truffles every Christmas, but it stopped when she started working night shifts. I’m going to restart the tradition this year. Every year for my husband’s birthday I make him some sort of pie – pudding pie, peanut butter pie, grasshopper pie.

  • Mmm, I love breakfast for dinner! When I was a kid my mom would make homemade caramel corn (with popcorn popped on the stove) and we would watch the Sunday night Disney movie. I don’t remember if it was a weekly thing but I definitely have fond memories.

  • For Christmas I always make a cheese ball recipe that has been passed down from my grandmother. We always really look forward to it.
