Homemade Solutions for Cloth Wipes

When I first started using Thirsties Cloth Diapers, I also started using their reusable cloth wipes. I think I have about 36 wipes in

my stash now. They are super soft and made from the same material as the Duo Fab Fitteds. Not only do I use them for diaper changes, I use them as washcloths to wipe sticky hands, cheeks or runny noses.  When I am changing Cooper's diapers, I use Thirsties Booty Luster with the wipes--a couple of sprays of Booty Luster on Cooper's tush, clean him up with a wipe, and toss it into my wet bag with the dirty diapers--saving me money and not putting disposable wipes into the landfill. You can also make your own cleaning solution at home to use with your cloth wipes.  I did a quick online search to see what other parents are using.  Here is what I found: Mild baby soap Olive oil Witch Hazel Tea tree oil Calendula oil Lavender oil Aloe vera Apricot oil White vinegar Honey Baking soda Here are three recipes I'm going to try that I found on a great website called ecocrazymom.com: Tea Tree and Lavender **great for preventing and treating diaper rash 1/8 cup of olive oil or baby oil 1 tablespoon of baby wash 5 drops of tea tree oil 10 drops of lavender oil 3 cups of water Anti-Fungal **great for treating yeast infection diaper rashes (Cooper has had two of these nasty, slow-healing rashes after taking antibiotics so if he gets one again I'm mixing up a batch of this solution!) 1/4 cup white vinegar 1 tablespoon calendula oil 5 drops lavender oil 5 drops tea tree oil 1/4 100% aloe vera gel 1 cup of water Herbal Solution 2 cups of water 2 teaspoons of baby wash 1/4 cup of 100% aloe vera gel 1 teaspoon calendula oil 3 drops of tea tree oil 3 drops rosemary oil 2 drops of eucalyptus oil You can take any of these recipes and tweak them--add a little more or a little less of any ingredients or add a drop of your favorite baby-safe essential oil to come up with your own custom cleaning solution to use with your cloth wipes.  Maybe you already have a favorite mixture? If you do, please share it with us! **Disclaimer: Please note that if you do use any of the above ingredients (especially oils) that you wash your cloth wipes separately from your cloth diapers.

  • We love our reuseable wipes! We just use water so we can stick to one diaper pail — and we don’t need a trash can, either.

  • I do a variation on the first and love being able to whip it up so fast!

  • I used to use baby wash diluted in water, but found that it wasn’t so great for my diapers…too much soap, I guess. Since my third baby was born, we’ve been using about a teaspoon of baby oil plus five or so drops of grapefruit oil diluted in water in a peri bottle (from our midwife after Lucy’s birth). It works great, and we’ve been washing the wipes with the diapers with no problems.

  • We have wipes but haven’t taken the plunge using them. Question: Do you use them with soiled diaper changes? If so, do you spray them off first? Like the diaper?
