We launched our Organic Cotton Flat Diaper in 2020 and for the first five years that it was offered for sale on our website, these are the only seven words that were used to describe it: “Our versatile 100% organic cotton flat diaper.”
Um…because…it’s a single ply layer of cotton fabric, cut into a square, and finished on the edges. What more is there to say?!?
Quite a bit, it turns out.
Flat diapers are the most economical cloth diaper. Just 24-36 of them will last you from birth to potty. They were the original “One Size” diaper before one size diapers were a thing. Our Organic Cotton Flats are very soft like a well-love t-shirt.
We recommend pairing your Organic Cotton Flat diapers (inner absorbency) with a Duo Wrap (outer waterproof layer) versus a Diaper Cover. Our Organic Cotton Flats offer a lovely slim fit and our trim-cut Duo Wraps will do a better job of keeping the diaper snug against baby. (1) Duo Wrap for every (3) Organic Cotton Diaper will do the trick.
Since they are just one layer thick, our Organic Cotton Flat Diapers win the grand championship when it comes to the thorough washing and speedy drying competition.
There are many different ways to fold a flat cloth diaper. If you want to stick with simple, search online for a video that demonstrates Flat Diaper Padfold. Folding flats can be fun -- like practical Origami -- and some families really enjoy getting creative with their flat diaper folding. As you start exploring various folding techniques, keep in mind that our knitted Organic Cotton Flats won’t work well with Snappi’s but they are deliciously soft and stretchy so pulling the ends in tight and tucking them in works as a great alternative.
Our Organic Cotton Flat diapers can also be used as One Size Pocket Diaper inserts, burp cloths, or simple travel changing pads.
Want to spice up your Organic Cotton Flat diapers? Arrange for a tie-dye baby shower and let your friends and loved ones contribute to adding colors and patterns to your baby’s diapers.
If you want to take a practical, no frills approach to cloth diapering, give our Organic Cotton Flats a go. Your Grandma will approve!

Before Using your Diapers:
01. Invest in some cloth diaper safe laundry detergent that won’t leave a residue on the fibers of your diapers. There are many options but a popular choice that you can find locally is Tide Free + Gentle. Search online for Cloth Diaper Detergent Index to find an detergent that works for you.
02. Prep-wash: Wash and dry all of your new Thirsties products with detergent and warm water before use.
Wash Soiled Diapers:
typically every other day
01. Wash on a Quick Wash cycle on warm with detergent to ‘pre-wash’ your Thirsties.
02. Add more detergent and wash with hot water on a Heavy Duty Cycle with an extra rinse. Add washing soda or Calgon if you have very hard water.
03. Hang dry in the sun whenever and wherever possible. Alternatively, dry in dryer on medium-high heat for about 60-75 minutes until fully dry. Add dryer balls for quicker drying.
Yep -- its really that easy! But if you are the type of person who loves some really solid over explaining, you can find our comprehensive care instructions in our Customer Center -> Care and Use.
A note on natural fibers:
Natural fibers tend to clean easier than synthetic materials, but you can expect to see wear on natural diapers earlier than a synthetic fiber diaper. Its impossible to say if/when holes might develop as there are too many variables involved; wash routines, water hardness, machine type, detergent and stash size are all variables that need to be considered. Edge wear holes in the fabric tend to develop in the top layer of natural fiber along the serged edges and leg casings, but in most cases the performance of the diaper is not affected.
